Although the King in the North is talking about his life experiences and struggles to reach a specific goal, our inner geeks could not help but wonder how it feels like to live in one of those Game of Thrones castles or any medieval castle in general.

There is something about castles that takes us back to the world of fantasy and mystery; it also gives an unexplainable romantic vibe when chivalry is very much alive.

In this age of bright colors, minimal decoration, and technology-controlled homes , we tend to think about wanting to travel back to the middle-age when homes are filled with arched ceilings, stone walls, wooden furniture, and bulky decorations that give us an overall archaism.

But who needs to travel back in time to experience such stunning architecture when dramatically revamping the living room could be an option? Eager to live like the Starks of Winterfell even just for a while? Below are some easy interior transformations that will turn the living room into your very own medieval kingdom.

1. Leave The Floor Bare

Medieval castles boast a bare floor that is usually made of stones, so marble tiles or wall-to-wall carpeting has no room during this era. Ditch the sparkly and shining floor and stick to a bare floor to achieve that middle-age vibe.

2. Stick to a Color Palette

Dark, rugged, and mysterious. These are the overall feel that we would like to achieve since castles are generally dark with less light coming in. So go for deep jewel-toned colors when shopping for appliances and decors. Such palettes may include colors like burgundy, dark green, brown, bronze, and gold.

3. Go Big On Furniture

Nothing screams "medieval" more than large wooden furniture with a robust presence. Always think big when looking for furniture as it is the key to achieve a castle-inspired space. Lean towards chunky, dark, and wooden pieces with intricate carvings.

A good example would be a wooden antique treasure box that can be transformed as a coffee table and can also serve as a storage box. Place it in the middle of the living room, top it with a dark faux fur table runner, and voila, instant accent piece in the medieval-themed area.

Another option would be scouting antique shops that sell gothic chairs with stunning wood carvings. No need to purchase the entire set of chairs, just a pair will make an adequate statement. Place it in the living room area where guests can lounge and enjoy a brass goblet like the Knights of the Round Table.

4. Use Stone-Printed Wallpaper

Medieval castles are built to protect the kings and the nobles of the old times, so it must be sturdy and can withstand any unwanted intruders, hence, the stone walls and floors.

Of course, we can't instantly build stone walls just to relive the dark ages in the living room. However, we can still achieve that stone-wall castle feels by using printed wallpapers. If you have some time for some DIY, faux-stone painting is the way to go.

5. Don't Forget The Fireplace

It is impossible for a medieval castle not to have a fireplace. Back in the days, aside from being the source of warmth, the open fire is the hallmark of a medieval castle.

If there is an existing fireplace, just fill the walls with dark stone-printed wallpapers. In the absence of a legit fireplace, create an illusion by making a life-size cardboard fireplace or stick a fireplace decal in a plain wall.

Use dark and heavy fabrics (like velvet) in the shade of black, maroon, dark purple, gold, or deep blue to achieve a castle window coverings. Another trick to get a medieval-themed window area is to place a no-sew fabric that gives a rough and classic look.

7. Use Fake Candles As Lighting

During the dark-age, electricity has not been invented yet, so castle people used a candle or torch as their source of light. Achieve an overall medieval look by using fake candles with LED lights and place them on brass holders on tables and walls.

8. Decorate with Medieval Memorabilia

Finish off the decors by adding interesting medieval collectibles like sigil banners, flags, statues, figurines, carved frames, and candle holders. They might be small and would not occupy a vast space in the living room, but it serves as an excellent "finishing touch" to complete the look.
